This song was written in honor of my favorite place to be on this earth. Up Country Maui. It was inspired by my friend Pekelo Cosma from Hana. Pekelo used to stay about halfway between Kahului and UpCountry in a little trailer off Omaopio Road.
Pekelo had this OLD Martin guitar that he found in trash heap. It was so beat up, he didn't know what kind of guitar it was. It had names written on it, was missing pieces, and was just in BAD shape. He took it to a luthier friend of his, and found out that what he had was an old Martin. Over time, he and his friend restored this guitar. It was a labor of love. . . and football wedges. I still remember that he didn't put a lacquer finish on the guitar, they just gave it a nice "tongue finish" as they didn't want to mess with the vibrations of the guitar.
The end result was the most beautiful sounding guitar. To this day, I've never heard it's equal. It also didn't hurt that it was being played by a master of the Hawaiian Slack Key guitar.
Regarding the song.
There's NOTHING like waking up, UpCountry Maui, and being able to watch the mists come rolling down the green slopes of Haleakala. This song is meant to take you through a day in the life, UpCountry. I love it.
